Protect Yourself: New Malicious Phishing Scam Spotted
April 6, 2020
With COVID-19 affecting nearly all corners of the world, fraudsters continue to exploit fear and anxiety as a way of provoking people to open malicious emails. The newest phishing campaign tells recipients that they have recently encountered a colleague, friend, or family member who has COVID-19, and they must be tested themselves.
The email then tells the recipient to “print the attached pre-filled form and take it with you to the nearest clinic for testing.” This is a scam. Do not fall for this! If you open the attachment and enable content, malware may be installed on your computer.
Remember to stay vigilant:
- Think before you click. Slow down. If something doesn’t seem right, delete it. Don't click on it.
- Never download/open attachments you weren’t expecting. Malware is often sent via an email attachment.
- Guard your financial information. Be wary of emails asking for account numbers, credit card numbers, wire transfers, and failed transactions. There’s no reason to share such information via an email message.
